Kathmandu Mayor Balen shah threatened to stall Adipurush release in Nepal Due to Controversial dialogue 'Sita is the daughter of India' काठमांडू के मेयर बालेन शाह ने विवादित संवाद 'सीता भारत की बेटी है' के कारण नेपाल में आदिपुरुष की रिलीज रोकने की धमकी दी
Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah has made an announcement stating that he intends to ban the screening of Hindi films in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. The ban is to be imposed until a particular portion of dialogue is removed from the film "Adipurush," directed by Om Raut. "Adipurush" is a retelling of the epic Ramayana.
Mayor Shah took to his Facebook page to express his stance, stating that Hindi films will not be permitted to run in Kathmandu Metropolitan City until the line, "Janaki is a daughter of India," is removed not only in Nepal but also in India. This decision comes after the Nepal Censor Board also decided to withhold permission for the screening of "Adipurush" due to the same reason.
The controversy revolves around the portrayal of Sita, a central character in the Ramayana. In the trailer of "Adipurush," Sita is mentioned as the daughter of India. However, according to the Ramayana, Sita was born in Janakpur, a city in Nepal, and Lord Ram traveled there to marry her. This deviation from the traditional narrative has caused discontent among Nepalese viewers.
The film was initially scheduled to be screened in Nepal starting from Friday, but the Nepal Film Censor Board has granted permission for its release only after the removal of the dialogue referring to Sita as the daughter of India. Now, all eyes are on the filmmakers to see if they will make the necessary changes to the film or not.
"Adipurush" has been a subject of heated debates since the release of its teaser last year. The filmmakers faced criticism when the teaser failed to meet expectations, as it was revealed that the movie would be a live-animation adaptation of the Indian epic, rather than a live-action one. The visual effects (VFX) work in the teaser was also criticized for its sub-par quality. These strong reactions prompted the filmmakers to postpone the release date from January and rework the movie's special effects.
It remains to be seen how this controversy surrounding "Adipurush" will unfold and whether the necessary modifications will be made to address the concerns raised by the Mayor and the Nepalese audience.
